Short answer: a GMT Seiko mod shows two time zones at once using the Seiko NH34 automatic, whose 24-hour hand sets independently of the main hands. Why GMT bezels come in two colours
A GMT's fourth hand goes around once every 24 hours, so the bezel is marked to 24 hours rather than 12. Because it covers a full day, it is split in two: one half for daylight hours, the other for night. Read the 24-hour hand against it and you know at a glance whether it is a sensible hour in the other zone. Two halves means two colours, and two colours is how a travel complication ended up with nicknames borrowed from soft drinks and superheroes.
None of those names were ever official. No manufacturer printed "Pepsi" or "Batman" on a watch. They survived because "two-tone 24-hour bezel in red and blue" is accurate and nobody says it, while "Pepsi" is two syllables everyone understands.

Bruce Wayne: grey and black
The one you wear to work. Grey against black is the lowest-contrast split in the range, so the day and night halves take a fraction longer to read than on a Pepsi. In return it disappears under a shirt cuff and goes with a suit. It is also the colourway people search for most, and the one most often confused with the Batman. Batman: blue and black
The two-tone split without any red in it. From across a room it reads as two shades of dark; up close the blue separates and the day/night halves are easy to tell apart. It is the quietest of the colourful ones. If a listing shows a blue bezel and calls it a Bruce Wayne, the seller has the names the wrong way round.
Pepsi: blue and red
The version most people picture when they hear "GMT". Red and blue sit far apart in tone as well as colour, so it is the most legible of the range at arm's length, which matters on a watch whose job is being read quickly in an airport. It is also the loudest. A red and blue bezel is a colour statement whether you intended one or not. Ours sits on a jubilee-style bracelet.
Coke: black and red
The same red for daylight, black instead of blue for night. That one swap turns a colourful watch into a mostly black watch with a red accent, and the change in character is bigger than the change in spec suggests. In low light both halves are dark, so it is marginally slower to read than the Pepsi. If it will be your only watch, worn five days a week, this is the one we recommend most often.
Sprite: green and black
The newest idea of the lot, and the one that splits opinion. Vivid green is the brightest thing on the watch in daylight, then closes down toward black under a desk lamp. Buy it if you already own a conventional GMT, or if the Pepsi felt too familiar. It is not the safe first choice, and we would rather say so. Root Beer and Rose Gold Root Beer
The colourways people scroll past first and then come back to. Our Root Beer runs a black and rose gold bezel on a two-tone oyster-style bracelet; the Rose Gold Root Beer uses the brown and black bezel in a rose gold tone. Warm metal sits with skin rather than on top of it, so these read as part of an outfit rather than a separate object. They are the dressiest GMTs we make: buy one if your rotation is black and steel and the gap is something warmer. Skip them if you need maximum bezel contrast in the dark, where the Pepsi does that job better.
Gold
Gold dial, gold-tone bezel, gold-tone bracelet. No subtlety intended. It is the GMT for someone who wants the watch to be the first thing noticed.
Which one to pick
- One watch for everything, nobody notices: Bruce Wayne.
- Daily wear, a little colour: Coke or Batman.
- The classic travel-watch look, most legible: Pepsi.
- Something nobody else at the table is wearing: Sprite.
- Dressier, warmer, for brown shoes and tan belts: Root Beer or Rose Gold Root Beer.
- Maximum statement: Gold.
If you cannot decide between two, pick the one you would wear on a Tuesday. A watch you wear every day beats one you admire on a Saturday.
How the NH34 GMT works
The Seiko NH34 is built by Time Module Inc, a Seiko Instruments subsidiary. It is an automatic with 24 jewels, 21,600 vibrations per hour and "more than 41 hours" of duration on the manufacturer's spec sheet, which lists its extra function as "24 hour hand or second time zone". It hacks (the seconds hand stops when you set it) and hand winds.
The everyday setup is main hands on local time and the 24-hour hand on a second zone. Set the 24-hour hand at the crown's first click: Caliber Corner documents the crown as "1 (pulled out one click): Clockwise = GMT hand / Counterclockwise = Date setting", with the main time at the second click (Caliber Corner, Seiko Caliber NH34). Caller GMT, flyer GMT, and fake GMT
A caller GMT (or office GMT) has an independent 24-hour hand: you point it at a second zone and it holds that zone while the main hands keep local time. That is what the NH34 is. A flyer GMT lets the local hour hand jump in one-hour steps, so a frequent traveller can change local time on landing without touching the second zone; that mechanism lives mostly in far more expensive Swiss watches, and the NH34 is not one. Ask any seller one direct question: can the 24-hour hand be set on its own? If they dodge it, assume it cannot.

Who should (and shouldn't) buy a GMT
Buy one if you travel, work across time zones, have family overseas, or simply like the look and want a working second time zone on a mechanical watch. Skip it if you will never use the 24-hour hand and want a clean three-hand watch: a Submariner-style or Datejust-style mod gives you the same build quality without the extra hand.

Is the GMT hand on a Rosevari mod actually functional?
Yes. Every Rosevari GMT uses the Seiko NH34, whose 24-hour hand sets independently to track a second time zone. It is not a decorative fourth hand.
Is the Seiko NH34 a caller GMT or a flyer GMT?
A caller GMT. The independent hand is the 24-hour hand, set at the crown's first click. The flyer layout, where the local hour hand jumps on its own, lives in far more expensive watches.
What is the difference between the Bruce Wayne and the Batman?
The bezel. Bruce Wayne is grey and black, Batman is blue and black. Movement, case and dial are the same.
Pepsi or Coke?
Pepsi if you want the most legible, most recognised version and are happy for it to be noticed. Coke if it will be your daily watch and needs to go with everything.
Can a GMT track more than two time zones?
Yes. The main hands and the 24-hour hand cover two zones, and rotating the 24-hour bezel lets you read a third against the same hand.
What is the difference between the NH34 and the NH35?
Both are Seiko automatics from the same family. The NH35 is a three-hand movement with a date; the NH34 adds the independent 24-hour hand for a second time zone.
Can I swim with a GMT mod?
