Hulk vs Kermit: the two green divers
Search "green Seiko diver mod" and you get two different watches sold under names people use almost interchangeably. They are not interchangeable. The difference is one component, and it changes the whole character of the watch.
- Hulk: green dial, green bezel. Everything green. Ours pairs a green dial with a matching green bezel on a steel link bracelet, so the colour runs edge to edge. It should be far too much and somehow never is.
- Kermit: black dial, green bezel. A classic black diver face wrapped in a vivid green ring. The dial stays serious and the bezel does the talking.
Same case, same movement. If a seller shows you a green dial and calls it a Kermit, they have it backwards.
Which one suits you? Buy the Hulk if you already own a black watch and want this one to be obviously different; a green dial is the kind people ask about. Buy the Kermit if it is doing daily duty: black dials are easier to read at a glance and go with everything, while the bezel gives you the colour. If you cannot decide, the Kermit is the safer first green watch and the Hulk the better second one. And if you like green on a travel watch, the Sprite GMT puts it on a 24-hour bezel.
Case size: get this right first
The dive silhouette was drawn at around 40mm, which is why the proportions look right at that size. Ours are 40mm (approximate, following the reference model). On wrists between roughly 16.5cm and 19cm a 40mm diver with a slim bezel wears as a proper tool watch rather than an oversized one, and it still goes under a shirt cuff. Watch the lug-to-lug length as much as the diameter, because that decides whether a watch overhangs your wrist.
The steel bracelet is the default. A rubber or NATO strap makes the watch more casual for very little money, and swapping takes a few minutes.
Crystal: insist on sapphire
Sapphire shrugs off the everyday scratches from doorframes, desks and keys that haze mineral glass within months. On a dive-style watch you actually wear, it is the spec that decides whether the watch still looks new in three years, and it is the one cheap mods cut most often because you cannot see the difference in a photo. Water resistance: the honesty line
This is where a lot of sellers overpromise. The standard Rosevari build is splash-resistant: rain, hand washing and weather, not swimming, showering or diving. Submariner-style builds also offer a Swim-Ready (5 ATM) and a Dive-Ready (10 ATM) option on the product page if you want to take it in the water. Either way, treat any depth printed on a dial in this category as decoration rather than a promise, and if you want a watch to dive with to depth, buy one certified to the dive-watch standard (ISO 6425). Movement: the Seiko NH35
Every Submariner-style dial runs a genuine Seiko NH35 automatic, built by Time Module, a Seiko Instruments subsidiary. It runs at 21,600 beats per hour with roughly 41 hours of power reserve, hacks (the seconds hand stops when you pull the crown, so you can set it to the second) and hand winds. It is the movement most of the modding world is built on, for the good reason that it keeps running and any watchmaker can service it. A mod or a used watch?
The honest comparison in this price range is often a second-hand watch of unknown history. A Seiko mod gives you a new movement, a new crystal and a warranty from the person who built it; a used watch at the same money gives you someone else's service history, or none. The trade: a mod will never be a collectible. It is a watch to wear, not an investment, and anyone telling you otherwise about a modded watch is selling something.
Is a Submariner homage a fake?
No. A counterfeit copies a brand's trademarked name and logo and passes itself off as the real thing. A homage borrows a design language, the shape, the bezel and the proportions, and puts a dial on it with no false branding. Read the dial: if it carries a luxury brand's name, walk away.
